Oh No honey, we have left the ghetto behind, we are uptown now - Meet me at the China Grill, I'll be ordering me up a big ol' duck salad, dial me up on my Star Trek cellular phone... Sandra Bernhard - I'm Still here, Damn it (1999).
Our reader Buster has shared these fantastic scans and photos he took of Madonna and Guy Oseary at New York City's China Grill for the party of Farewell My Concubine in 1993. Madonna took some time out of her busy Girlie Show schedule to throw this party and grace it with Star Quality.
So cool!
ReplyDeletenice pictures, that is very cool.

ReplyDeleteGreat, more 1993 pics :-)
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU FOR POSTING! It was a great experience as well as being able to see 2 nights of Girlie Show while I was there. HA HA! My story is quite long but here goes...
ReplyDeleteSo, we read in the USA Today paper that Madonna was having this party at China Grill. This was our first time in NYC and we had no clue what we were doing but we were determined to find this place. We got dressed up and found it! We were quite surprised. We thought it would be closed or shut down to the public but they allowed us to go in and have dinner. I ordered a $22 salad which is too expensive even for today. We were sure this dining experience would break us but we didn't care...we were quite possibly in the same room as Madonna. We thought about ordering dessert to extend our stay and a chance to see Madonna however the waiter came over to us and said they were closing early for a "private party." This was the first time we had ever had a chance to see Madonna so we didn't know what to do. Looking back, it was silly for me to think they would let us in while she was having the party. They pretty much evacuated the restaurant and so we left. We walked out and notice police barracades and it got us a bit excited. We got behind the barracades as no other fans had arrived just yet. I am pretty sure we waited for about 2 hours before anything started to happen.
After a couple of hours, we noticed Guy Oseary arrived. THAT was confirmation that we were certainly in the right place. About 30 minutes later, MADONNA ARRIVED! The feeling is overwhelming. This would be a first chance to see my idol up close and not in concert. I couldn't believe it was happening. She was escorted by her bodyguards and in the one pic, you can see her tiny little blond head and ear in between the guys. She then kept walking and got closer and I FROZE! She was literally within 2 feet of me and I couldn't move so much to take a picture! After she walked in, she was interviewed inside and I started taking pictures of that (you can see her blond head again through the door above the door sign. I was so disappointed that I didn't take more pictures while she was in front of me...I just was in awe. (I later redeem myself!)
ReplyDeleteShe was inside for about 3 hours or so. We shifted from the barracade to a window where we had a perfect view of her at her table. I don't remember seeing any other celebrities but then again, I was only looking for her. I never saw her eat but she had a salad and a bottle of San Pellegrino mineral water in front of her. People came to her table and spoke to her while she had her arm over the back of chair as she sat (I can still see this in my head)! She left her table and we rushed back to the barracade to make sure we got our spots back. If she came out, the only thing seperating Madonna and I would be the barracade at my belt line. We waited and waited. We even waited some more! FINALLY...we see her coming through the doors and awe came over me again! I sww her walking out the door with her bodyguard and immediately starting taking pics.
ReplyDeleteThen, FINALLY...she gets closer and closer and literally within a foot away, she walks right by me with her bodyguard on the other side of her this time. No one and nothing obstructing my view of her. It was important to me that I saw her. This woman who had inspired me for almost 10 years (at this point in 1993) and I was so fortunate.
ReplyDeleteI swear I could almost smell her but honestly...I think this was me just being hopeful. She was within a foot from me and then she walked by, smiled (not at me as I was in her profile), and she got in her limo. I just remember sitting on the street curb and watching her limo drive away. I truly was starstruck and still the closest I have ever been to Madonna until 2004 (RIT pit section in California)!!!
THANKS Pud for allowing me to relive this!!! I love this woman! And I love you for managing the best blog I have come across!!!
ReplyDeletefantastic, buster. thanks for sharing all of this. xo
