"I Don't Think I Ever Was Critically Successful"

"It's really interesting, if you took out the reviews of my work and things that I did and compare them, they're still saying the same thing. I've always had to deal with this sense of people trying to predict that I would soon fail and I've been dealing with that my entire career." - Madonna 1995

Has anything really changed? They've been slamming her ass since the gate. 28 years after her Inception - critics, the public and even her fans, still demand that Madonna prove herself. Absolutely Ridiculous. The Greatest Star That Has Ever Lived. Full stop. People can't take it.

  1. Bravo! Fck those who keep praising this Gaga thing. She has ONE ALBUM. Yes, people. ONE ALBUM and an EP. This is the person Gaga is trying to be and will NEVER be. Gaga lacks the smarts and the looks. In 30yrs when Gaga is Madonna's age, come back and compare the teo, til then, it's all about Madonna. End of.

  3. Yea, see, I kinda like some of her songs, but the way people go on and on about her being the new Queen of Pop and this and that is what is turning me off, big time. They can love and praise her all they want, but STOP COMPARING HER TO 'THE FACE', MADONNA!!!!!

Also, can you upload this 1995 video to youtube? I love this snippet and would like to post it on a friends page, but blogger doesn't give me that option.

I have this whole interview on video somewhere. I remember recording it when it first aired. Was great. I was 17. Such good memories.

  4. I love that Madonna continues (over and over and over again) to prove her critics wrong.

The minute an artist begins getting 100% acclaim, you get a Whitney Houston (TRAIN WRECK) or a Celine Dion (DEEP COMA).

Madonna is the only one to continue to push the envelope and to experiment and branch out. That is the sign of a TRUE artist.

If she wanted to be like those other bitches, she'd just continue to release different versions of "Take A Bow".

That Madonna continues to get under so many people's skin (one way or the other) is a GOOD thing!

  5. Before I start this comment, I am a Gaga fan HOWEVER I am not one of the fans that call her "The Queen Of Pop." I don't think she is trying to be Madonna but it is inevitable that Madonna is one of her influences. She doesn't lack smarts at all - its quite the opposite. If I were to compare her to Madonna in any way, it would be in the "smart" department. I am not going to sit here in a Madonna blog and defend Gaga but I will say this...all the horrible things being said about Gaga now were said about Madonna in the early 80's (and you just heard in that video what Madonna thought about those critics).

I love this video clip because its so TRUE! I tend to disagree a bit because I do think she was critically successful during The Virgin Tour. Granted, they said she wouldn't last six months when she came out as an artist but I think people were fond of her during 1985. Of course, those same people are the ones who turned on her but I think she had the success. The whole thing is that they give you a little bit and take it away from you for good. Its fine by me. It proves Madonna's worth even more. The fact that all of the bad press and lack of chart making songs and albums were running high, Madonna managed to still be successful all of these years. Honestly, the countries Madonna went to and the kind of success she had on the S&S Tour floors me. No, it wasn't her best concert ever, but those numbers speak for themselves! Madonna is my first love and always will be. She raised me...I may "date" other female singers from time to time (Tori Amos, Gwen Stefani, Alanis, Adele, and yes, even Gaga) because they all bring something to the table for me. But Madonna...its been 27 years of bliss and love and respect! I love her...always will!

  6. I think Gaga can become an interesting artist and she brought a lot of excitment back into pop. BUT her music is terrible, I'm sorry, it sounds like cheap electronica and she will have to bring something a lot more substancial to the table if she wants a long career.

There's no way she will be the new Madonna because Madonna herself is a product of a specific time where music and videos cared a lot more. I'm sure she will get her ups and downs but Gaga is destined to become a Vegas act when she's 40, with her piano and her Halloween masks...

  10. Lyrically, Gaga is a genuis! So much thought goes into her writing. We are in a different era of music and video and I think Gaga is changing that. She puts much thought into her videos (Paparrazi, Bad Romance, Telephone) and if you don't take it literally, you will find meaning in it. Again, I am not here to make anyone a Gaga fan - my intentions are to share thoughts, not brainwash. Plus, I want to be respectful to Pud because this is a Madonna blog. I don't think Gaga is the next Madonna...I don't think anyone can be the next Madonna. Madonna proved herself in a time where there was no internet or American Idol and what Madonna did to change music is incomparable. Even though there will never be another Madonna, I think we can allow other artists to create and prosper. It doesn't have to be about who is better than who. It should be about what its always should've been about...the music! LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!

  12. I'm less concerned with what people think and more concerned with why they think what they do. I'm not going to argue with you Tony because we are entitled to our opinions. But this could be a great discussion if we could get passed the name calling and one liners and figure out what makes her talentless in your eyes. I don't like arguing for the sake of doing so nor do I do it to win (not sure anyone ever wins). I argue (or discuss as I like to call it) to learn more. It makes me less ignorant when I know why people think what they do. In the end, I am not trying to change your mind but respect it. We will undoubtedly agree to disagree but I will be better because of it.

  13. Gaga is a pop star and has only presented herself in re-incarnations of a million other artists, doing exactly what they did and looking exactly like they did. She is not deep and there is no reason to go deep for a singer with one album. In 25yrs we can come back and try to analyse her.

  14. well tony, to be fair, with madonna's first album, i was totally and completely in love. im not a fan of this joanne woman that everyones talking about in here, shes putrid but evidently, people are digging her. shes just another link in the wannabe chain.

  15. well, yes, pud, i understand people liking her and i am fine with that. i enjoy her songs as well, but when people compare someone with one album to madonna, who has been in the business for 28 years, it bugs me. there is no comparison. the more people continue to do it, the further it will push a lot of people away from this gaga thing.

  16. I think people who compare artists to other artists do it to make them feel at ease or better about putting them in a certain box. Once again, there will never be another Madonna! Of course she only has one album (maybe 1 and half with the EP) - but its only one and a half because she released her first album two years ago. But she paid her dues in the club scene (like Madonna), she got popular with her first album (like Madonna), she has fans dressing like her (like Madonna), and she has a huge gay following (like Madonna). Those events and her smarts are the only thing that are "like" Madonna. You don't have to compare the two but you can't deny the influence. Gaga's music is deep. Sure she has gratuitous songs like "Just Dance" but so did Madonna with "Holiday." Gaga is a mash up of different artists - I agree with you. But so was Madonna. She was inspired by Chrissie Hynde and Blondie and Madonna turned out to be a mash up of them in the early 80's. I am not saying Madonna is not original - she was and is and I think her being in the business for almost 30 years allowed people like Gaga to come forward and create their own. The bottomline is that pop music has been boring with the likes of Spears and Pussycat Dolls and that awful Kesha. It is great to have Gaga reviving pop music. I refuse to "analyze" Gaga in 25 years...its so limiting. I analyzed Madonna's existence since day one and I still do.

  17. paid her dues? she is 23. she can only legally go into clubs for 2yrs. lol. and for the gays? please. she is straight and pulls an act like she is bi. bullshit. she knows the way to longevity is through the gays. she just seems so fake to me. no substance. sorry, just my opinion.

  18. I appreciate your opinion Tony. I truly do...sometimes, we get stuck in our way of thinking and things we like and I appreciate criticism when its objective. I get you. Again, I am not defending Gaga but here are some facts: she started playing piano at age 4, she started writing at 13, played open mic nights at 14, studied music at 17 at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, at 19 she was signed and dropped from Def Jam Records and started playing clubs at 19 years of age (you and I both know the 21 age limit doesn't really apply...anyone can get in anywhere if they know how to). Madonna moved to NYC when she was 19 and signed a deal with Sire at age of 23. And by the way, Gaga doesn't have to be bi to have a gay following - that's not why they like her. Same as Madonna, she has kissed many women in her time but doesn't claim to be bi - is that bullshit? I don't think so. I appreciate that you think she has no substance - we are entitled and like what we want. I think that's what makes this world so beautiful - we don't like the same things and are individuals. I appreciate that and I appreciate you. Most of all, I appreciate Pud for this blog! Sorry to ambush it with Gaga talk - let's back to what's really important - THE QUEEN!!!!

  19. Umm, a bit of sour grapes eh there Madge? Although, honestly, I'm not surprised. She was still going through the backlash of the Sex book/Erotica album/Body of Evidence fiasco...and the world was still basically calling her a tired piece of crap. Although to say she's never been commercially successful is a bit of a stretch eh there Madge?

  20. she said she'd never been CRITICALLY successful. which remains true.
