Nothing Really Matters

Love the red brows.

One of my favorite Madonna videos. Hatsumomo is ready to roll. Under appreciated at the time, hopefully over time fans have come to appreciate. I really dig Johan Renck's work. Take a look after all these years.

  5. I adored the Nothing Really Matters video from the get go. It's a masterpiece. It also had a great effect on fashion and music, you saw the kimonos and the japanese art popping uo everywhere after it.

One of the things that caught my attention was the fact that Madonna got inspired by Hatsumomo, who was the antagonist in the story and quite evil. Most people would align themselves or identify themselves with the protagonist in the story, Sayuri in this case, so it's weird.

I also relate, because when I read the book(way before NRM as opposed to the rest of Madonna fans) I was just mesmerized by Hatsumomo. I wanted the whole book to be about her, she was such a fascinating character.

  6. not a personal favorite but as always i love her commitment to whatever obsession is flowing thru her veins. i could barely keep up during that period... first it was Goth then it was Indian then it was Botticelli then it was Geisha... she took us on a world cruise with ROL!

  7. This single was a resounding flop. Accept that.

  8. I wonder why the song wasn't really well received... it was a good song. I dont think Ive ever heard it on the radio -- which was weird because Madonna seemed to be very radio-fiendly until the Amerian Life album.

  9. She looks so creepy in his video- I love it! I'd read the book before this video came out so I knew instantly what the influence was. This is one of my favorite songs on Ray of Light.

  10. Amazing video, no idea what it's about, but it's definately one of the last videos that was visually stunning and not cheap looking. When I first heard ROL this was my favourite song, classic pop! By the way, it got to number 7 on the UK charts and the video was on all the time, so it wasn't a flop on this side of the water.

  12. And yet again ... is feeling bloated and old so "it" feels the need to come and spread his diseased mouth on a fan site lol. Shouldn't you be at KFC buying a bucket of fried chicken for your date night with yourself?

  13. I wonder where my original comments went to...hmmm....

@JC: the song actually had good buzz in the U.S.---the problem was with WB. Madonna was on a resurgence on U.S. pop radio and culture at the time with the ROL project. She had gotten the Grammy nods around the time that NRM was picking up steam, and around the time of the release of the video.

The problem is that WB waited FOREVER to release the physical single of the track. They waited until *after* the Grammy's to release the single, so in the meantime, Madonna had to depend on radio support and video buzz. With ROL, though, WB should've seen that they fared better with her singles if they released them at the same time they promoted them to radio.

KIIS FM was playing this song *a lot* during the time of the Grammy nods, and stupid WB didn't capitalize on it properly. Also, for some super STRANGE reason, the video premiered upside down (on purpose) on MTV. Supposedly, that was done on purpose, but who the hell knows.

WB simply waited too long to fully promote/push this track on radio and they waited too long to release a physical copy of the single.

The album (ROL) saw a resurgence on the charts because of the Grammy nods, so my guess is WB decided they preferred album sales vs singles sales/success which makes sense financially, but in terms of pop chart status, they could've had a possibly 4th single in the top 20 from ROL, not to mention allowing the brilliant video to get more exposure.

Hands down, one of my favorite M. videos from the post 1990-era. It's one of the few I still watch from that time. I got to see B-roll footage of the video at a friend's pad...it was pretty cool.

  14. I love the song and the video! Madonna should concentrate more on music like this. After the Hard Candy failure she's in desperate need of something really creative and unseen/-heard. She should get together with Stuart and Mirwais again...
