soooo sexy! that shoot was near perfection if only she weren't channeling shirley temple with her canary yellow curls. wonder why there weren't more helmut newton shoots throughout the years... she was his ideal... maybe too voracious for his lens
brian, i wish they worked together again, as well. its funny, he was always someone i wanted her to work with prior to this shoot. i loved what they came up with but possibly their own personalities were too strong. he loved those tall, strong, amazonian women. madonna photographs as such but we all know thats not the reality.
it was shot at the bar - 'smalls KO' on east melrose. building is still there but its something new now. its across from paramount stuidos. it really looked like that inside. it was all cool and kind of retro. xo
oh i remember Smalls... and i remember M remarked in an interview once how she revealed her breast to Newton's lens during this shoot with liz protesting in the bkgnd (this wasn't that many years after the playboy nudes were released, ya know). anyways... my fave shot is M outstretched on the bar in B&W... timeless classic radiant Madonna
This photo and many unseen angles from this Vanity Fair shooting can be seen in the great Madonna book by Anne Bleuzen (published by K&B, 2005). I always wondered if the guy behind Madonna, standing near the window could be Tony Ward, but Tony himself told me that he was not in the shooting, but they are similar, no?
I loved this photo spread. This pic in particular tells a great story... she looks like a gangster's moll. Maybe she's a nightclub singer in this gangster's bar.
Hey Pud, did you ever post this magazine article and pictorial on your blog?
I read in an interwiev with Jürgen Teller, I suppose you guys know who that is, that H N said M was the only person infront of his lens that he was not able to photograph. maybe that's why they never worked together again.
