GROUND ZERO - KCRW - Madonna and the Making of 'Music' - Sat Oct 07, 2000

Here is a fabulous interview that aired on KCRW in October of 2000 to promote Music. I remember hearing and taping it off the radio on cassette the day it aired! Chris Douridas talks Music with Guy Sigsworth, Mirwais, Joe Henry, and a pregnant Madonna for a good 40 minutes.

The brilliant KCRW and NPR News is having a pledge drive as we speak - make a donation to public, commercial free radio - HERE.

  2. Wow, what a great reminder of how good the 'Music' album really is. Joe Henry's 'Stop' demo is amazing, gonna have to try and track that version down.

I hope her next album is more along the lines of 'Music' in that she finds some great new producers and has a mix of dance tracks with more introspective tracks.

'Nobody's Perfect' and 'Paradise (Not For Me) are two of her greatest songs in my opinion.

  4. This album sounds so dated now, but at the time it was innovative.

This is one of my least favorite albums of hers. Following the amazing Ray of Light album I felt that this album was too rushed and maybe she could have had more that 10 songs on it. But, I do like the songs Don't Tell Me, What it Feels Like for a Girl, Paradise (Not for Me)and Gone.

Wish she released Paradise....that would have been a great video.

  5. love this interview.. though she was a tad bitchy to sweet chris douridas in the beginning... but it really goes to show you how shrewd her instincts have been since the beginning... from nile rodgers, to william orbit, mirwais and stuart price. her music so often gets overshadowed by her antics.. but her contributions to popular & dance music are meteoric

  6. Easily one of her least enjoyable albums, but it was nice to see her topping the charts again. Cold, dark, mechanical, stripped of all emotion. The album lacked warmth and was too distant for me. Thank you for bringing this interview to our attention, Pud!

  7. Paradise (Not for Me) is probably in my top 10 Madonna songs of all time. I loved the album but wish it had been called What It Feels Like For a Girl instead. Just my thoughts! Great interviews. Always good to hear Madonna talk about being in the studio.

  8. Never heard this interview-thanks so much Pud Whacker!

As for the Music album, it's uneven for me. At moments, it's incredible. Other moments, it's mediocre. Ultimately though it was the right album at the right time, and musical step forward for Madonna. It was a magical time in Madonna's career. Ray of Light made her a force again, and it was the Music album that made her "cool" again for the mainstream.

  9. i always thought "music" was one her most cohesive and tightest albums. 10 tracks was a good number to have, in my opinion, rather than say, 8 or 13.

and this was when madonna became "cool" again, remember?

  10. Tony: I really enjoyed Music. I wouldve described American Life as "cold, dark, mechanical, stripped of all emotion. The album lacked warmth and was too distant for me." What'd you think of AL?

  11. IMO AL certainly did not lack warmth and emotion. i don't think I need to list which tracks I'm referring to. but yes I agree that the album Music was disjointed but you can't escape the brilliance of a song like 'Gone'.

  12. I feel the same way about AL as I do about, "Music", though, "Music" has more songs I enjoy.

Madonna has always and will always be cool.

  13. well, yeah, i think madonna has always been cool, but with "music," the mainstream loved her again. at least in america.
