You Can Dance - Vinyl

In late 1987, You Can Dance was released. It kind of came out of nowhere and was such a wonderful surprise. My neighbor worked at R&R - Radio & Records, so he would always give me the promotional Madonna albums that would come in. In those days they would receive the albums a week or two before the release date. So, one day he came home with You Can Dance.

I love You Can Dance. Spotlight - a new song! Still one of my favorites with one of those fabulous Madonna bridges. The reworking of the other songs. Physical Attraction and other non singles getting the respect they deserved. It was just so fantastic. And all non-stop. Love the album art and all the mixes and just everything about that time. It really was a great way to end 1987 and a great segue and tiding over into '88, where we as fans would see very little of Madonna.

  3. This is my 14 year old daughters favourite CD. It was my CD, but somehow daughter thinks she can have it. We put Spotlight on loud and dance like eejits in the living room.
    Good times :)

  4. I love 'Spotlight'!

Such a positve and uplifting song. I wish she would have released it as a proper single. I am sure it would have reached number one. This song is just as good as Holiday, Into the groove, Music and Celebration!

I also wish she released 'The Look of Love' in the US. Another number for sure!

@Maar: I agree, this was not a good hairstyle for M. Not sure why she kept it like that for so long. I wonder what it would have been like if M never changed her boy to imgage until 'Like a Prayer'.

  5. This was in fact the first Madonna record I ever owned!! God, how I LOVED my copy: that glossy red, the hand-writing, those two fabulous shots... And of course the music! I couldn´t stop playing it, over and over (pun naturally intended;)

  6. This is one Madonna album that hasn't aged well in my opinion. Especially the horrible dub versions. Some of it is good though, and it's a lot of fun. I'm a big fan of Physical Attraction. Spotlight is so-so. What is really bad though is the horrible outfit she's wearing. A true 80's horror that will never look again.

  7. Can we also bring attention to the amazing liner notes that gave us our first true Madonna retrospective? It launched her into a whole new league. Building a legend only happens once in a blue moon (and there is no blue moon on the horizon Lady Goober fans), and You Can Dance had a hand in this one's very intricate infrastructure.

  9. I remember listening to this record in my brother's room around 9 or 10 years old. (Like many other early Madonna memories in my childhood). I loved spotlight. And I was obsessed with her outfit and poses on the cover. My brother had so many early Madonna records. He still has them in his basement!
