Debbie Harry Resented Madonna's Success

The Gloves Alone!

I don't know who handles her public relations but I think it's a dire mistake for Debbie Harry to always put herself next to Madonna in a sentence. It diminishes everything she has accomplished.

HERE if anyone's interested.

  2. She needs to stop comparing herself to Madonna, she has influenced so many. She needs to let this comparison go.

  3. I agree, although she may not bring her up herself in interviews and is just asked about her.
I think she's being honest in that quote, that she didn't appreciate everyone saying M stepped in her shoes.
M basically eclipsed everyone back then, so a lot of people must not have been happy.

  4. i don't interpret it quite so harshly. that quote and what precedes it are below (full article: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/woman/3849348/Debbie-Harry-What-I-wish-I-had-known-at-18.html):

"I also got into drugs for a couple of years and went into rehab. I wish I had never gone near them — and, in Blondie's early years, I didn't... At one of my lowest points, Madonna started her career and everyone said she stepped into my shoes. I was kind of shocked and not very happy in the long run."

i believe Debbie is saying that Madonna's initial success came at her own lowest point and this kind of magnified her flailing career in her own mind. it's not a dig at m, it says more about debbie. also, some people might misinterpret 'stepping into my shoes' as 'stepping on my toes'... debbie's acknowledging that madonna superceded her.

when she is talking retrospectively about music, the 80s and success i think it's fitting to mention m. and let's also understand something - without debbie there would be no madonna. anyone who disagrees hasn't full grasped the evolution of female pop music.

  5. and you don't like the gloves, pud? if m rocked them i'm sure you'd find a way to justify them lol... besides, m associates herself with a middle-aged woman who wears antenna headband's at most events. what it's liz so it's cool right.

  7. First off, Debbie has in her mind that she paved the way for Madonna. I hate to say, cause I love Debbie, but she comes across as the forgotten stepsister so often! Even with Debbie, I'm certain we'd still have Madonna.

Madonna came into her own shoes! She didn't take over where Debbie left off, however much Deb would like to think that.

  11. Debbie, Cyndi, Janet, Mariah... they've all made digs at Madonna. Jealousy is not pretty, especially magnified by the press. But thy all know that M's star power is undeniable, unbreakable and unparalleled!

  12. slide, why does criticism of another person have to imply jealousy on the criticisers part? i don't agree. maybe they really fucken hate an aspect of what they do, period? maybe on principle, they have fundamental problems with how a person operates? madonna is flawed and she is human. please get over yourself.

  14. Love Debbie, but she sounds jaded to me. In fact when M first came on the scene, the only person she was being compared to was Cyndi Lauper. I don't remember any talk about DH. She was a cool chick and her and M definitely had some connection, but I don't think Madonna would not have happened without Debbie.

  15. Debbie is a legend and I love her HOWEVER, NOBODY could have been Madonna except for Madonna. Even the fact that she was named Madonna (who names their kid Madonna?) proves it was destiny. If Madonna copied anyone it was Cyndi Lauper and if Madonna stepped into anyone shoes it was Cyndi Lauper
