Fetish Ponytail?
or Curls?
Ever since the advent of internet forums, Madonna fans have always been divided on one thing: Blond Ambition Ponytail or Curls? Ha, it's true!
Well, Peter from TheBeatsWithin has spoken with a special someone who may have uncovered the reason why!
For an artist such as Madonna, obviously her image is very important, so were there any other technical challenges in presenting Madonna in the best light on the big screen?
There was another conversation that Madonna and I had about her hair. She had often used that I Dream of Jeannie hairdo, with her hair pulled back in a tight bun at the back of the head and it was my feeling that for the movie, that was a little severe. I thought that she looked a good balance between commanding and a little bit more feminine with the blonde bob look. I don’t know whether I talked her into it, but I told her which one I preferred.
In truth, she probably could have done both. Thinking about the way it was edited, it wouldn’t have been bad to have a show where she did it with one look and a show where she did it with the other look and then through the cut, put in a bit of both. So, I’m not sure who decided that she just did it all the same way.

I've always leaned towards the fetish ponytail over the curls because well, it was the first thing we saw and I believe it was conceived with the costumes but I love it all. What is your preferred hair from Blond Ambition? Ponytail or Curls?
When I was a teenager, definitely the curls. But now as I get older, I totally RECOGNIZE and RESPECT and ADMIRE her choice and aesthetic for the ponytail. M was and is way ahead of her time. The ponytail has aged very gracefully.
ReplyDeleteCurls all the way! She looked terrible with that horse tail on her head!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness she had the curls when they filmed the beautiful concert shots for ToD!
Ponytail, of course!!!! it was avant garde, it was fashion, it was fresh!!! the shirley temple locks got all stringy and limp half way thru the show.
ReplyDeleteIm sorry but this shouldn't even be a question Pud!
ReplyDeleteBOTH!
they are both iconic and part of the BAT historic imagery.
The Madonna way.
Start it out w/ the ponytail then work the curls in as the hair grows longer. I always thought she started with the ponytail so her hair would NOT look too much like WTGT.
Love them both if you differ than yr. a late fan!
xo
Ps what about the garbage performer earlier this year trying to pull off the ponytail after she ripped the opening song off BAT. If anyone to this day denies that rip off then they should be shot!
Ponytail only worked for Barbara Eden and Madonna.
dont be questioning my authority, 39b41. EAT IT!!!
ReplyDeleteNo pud you're the CUNT
ReplyDeletePONYTAIL! Iconic!!
ReplyDeleteYOUR MAMA!!!
ReplyDeleteSean,
ReplyDeleteYOUR MAMA!!!
ReplyDeletePonytail. It is what she wanted for the tour but had to stop cause it was pulling the roots of her hair, hence the change to the curls.
ReplyDeleteI do like, however, that whenever you see pics, it does let us know what part of the country she was in. Curls for Europe and Pony everywhere else (except Australia of course).
I saw her with the ponytail, but I think I prefer the curls. Especially when she gets damp and the curls start to fall out! Both were good, but I like when the sweat takes the curls to a nice sweaty boblike cut.

ReplyDeleteHow in the world is a simple, plain jane ponytail fresh or fashion? LOL.
ReplyDeleteShe looked better with the curls: Fact.
oh snap, somebody's uptight! Tony honey, I'm sure those platinum curls look adorable ON YOU!!! lmfao
ReplyDeleteHuh?
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming English isn't your first language. :)
Ponytail. Iconic and how she was meant to look on that tour.
ReplyDeleteWithout no doubt the PONYTAIL is what the look was always supposed to be about, I was so disappointed when she came to Europe with those awful curls.

ReplyDeletePonytail! But honestly at the time I loved the curls and the change for the show. it freshend it up at made it mor popular for the masses. But the Debi Mazar ponytail was the original conception and the most iconic. Ponytail all the way!
ReplyDeleteI thought I read at the time that the ponytail was giving her migraines which was why she switched. Could be some combination of her hair getting long enough and wanting a change - the ponytail must have been challenging to wear. Interesting idea that she heeded the cinematographer who found the curls more appealing - he's was trying to make her a sexy chick without understanding that the severity was the point...
ReplyDeleteI always thought the ponytail was causing a problem with her head-mic as she was dancing.
ReplyDeleteas interesting as this new information is, I highly doubt M would ditch the ponytail for the ENTIRE European tour just because it looked better on film. If that was the case, she would have just worn the curls on the Paris dates. I don't believe it... but I definitely prefer the ponytail, which looks fine to me in the Yokohama and Houston pro-shot shows.
ReplyDeleteI'm for the PONYTAIL. I remember seeing the Wembley pics and thinking the curls looked like a terrible mistake. The ponytail was so stylish.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading that a fan had tried to pull the ponytail out and that was why she ditched it. Is that the most ridiculous theory so far?
not to be a notice everything girl/boy but in your collage you have a pic of her with curly hair in the pony tail spot.
ReplyDeletejust sayin
I'm for the bionic look,so totally the ponytail.
ReplyDeleteThe curls after a while were quite messy.Perfect for photoshoots, not for the concert if you ask me.
The ponytail was fetiche,and strength,fierceness.
She looked like an epic amazon. The first and the last warrior.

ReplyDeleteBoth but if i had to choose i'd say CURLS!
ReplyDelete@Codex - YES!!! Bionic, fetish, warrior!!!
ReplyDeletelmao!
ReplyDeleteI'm all for preference, but she looked like trash from arkansas with that cheap, fake ponytail.
There was nothing iconic about it. The costumes she wore on the tour were iconic, not the hair.
Ponytail all the way.
ReplyDeleteI love how tony said "its a fact" like saying that his opinion is the only one that matters. He makes me laugh.
Pony Tail 100% - Sometimes the Curls were 'OK' but the fact that they washed out during the show for obvious reasons just made it messy.
ReplyDeleteI just think the Pony Tail works better with the whole first section and makes the Express Yourself corset look so much better. And it fits fine with the other sections of the concert as well.
@Lito - I never state anything as a fact unless it is one.
ReplyDeleteShe LOOKED more attractive with the curls. That's a fact. Whether or not you liked the curls or ponytail better wasn't my factual statement.
Glad I could make you laugh. :)
fact/fakt/Noun:
ReplyDelete1.A thing that is indisputably the case.
2.Information used as evidence or as part of a report or news article.
o·pin·ion/əˈpinyən/Noun:
1.A view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
2.The beliefs or views of a large number or majority of people about a particular thing.
Yes, it is a fact that Madonna looked better with curls. The ponytail was harsh and people seem to think it was iconic, which I won't dispute, but nobody has said she looked prettier with the tail.
ReplyDeleteAgain, fact.
isn't there a Hide feature on this blog? ya know.. like the one we all use on Facebook when an annoying blabbermouth has diarrhea of the mouth 24-7!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGood idea, Slide, but then how would you ever get noticed?
ReplyDeleteYou are so fucking negative! Knock it the fuck off!!
My God.
Madonna looked pretty with the ponytail.
ReplyDeleteFact.
Just sayin'.
Right. And Lady Gaga has large, dense breasts and a tiny nose.
ReplyDeleteThat is very true Tony. Good observation.
ReplyDeletePonytail!
