  1. I love Madonna with blond hair and black roots. She looked good in this movie, even if it's unwatchable. Could you get a bigger contrast between Who's That Girl and this?

  2. its funny you say that, DLB. madonnas roles have always been so completely diverse while other actresses always play the same part in a different movie.

  3. Does anyone remember the page long plot summary that was published in Icon magazine a year before the release of the movie? It was so much more conventional than the final result. I've always wondered if the final edit was just a butchered version of what was actually filmed.

  4. no, i never saw that. do you have it top secret?

  5. Definitely her best acting effort, no matter what you think of the film.

  6. That sounds like an interesting article. I remember Madonna saying that the final film was butchered and was nothing like the film she thought she was making. The director is definitely not a nice chap. See this discussion clip from last year:

Pud - agree re Madonna's roles. Norman Mailer praised Madonna for her choices in the Esquire article from 1994.

  8. This is the only movie with her I really call a shit

But I like some parallels that I made in some lines and scenes with her own life.

  9. i've never seen her more desperate, vulnerable and broken in a film role... and it's really the only movie where i absolutely cannot see Madonna the Superstar shining through her choices

  10. Pud...I can't seem to find that magazine anymore, but I remember that the description was very exciting. The original ending was very different. In the original plot, the movie they are filming gets released. The movie brings them huge success and honors, yet in real life, they are completely broken by what they experienced filming it.

I remember being shocked by how deconstructed the final movie was. Maybe that's why Madonna said that Ferrara "fucked her over"?

  11. @dontlookback, thanks for sharing the interview.

And I agree with Berry, she did a good job, no matter how the movie turned out

  12. I saw this movie in a small indie theater and left puzzled. I thought she was Incredible in it. I kept going back to Bruna when she was raped in ACS. HA!
Madonna has played it all, comedy, drama- suspense. all of it.

  14. One of my top 5 Madonna films, probably her most natural acting and at her most beautiful throughout, when not completely ravaged as in the clip above. Shame she was fucked over by the director in the cutting room. The ending is like a sucker punch in the stomache for feminism and justice.
Incidentally, my the rest of my top 5 Madonna films consists of Evita, Truth or Dare, Swept Away and Desperately Seking Susan tied with Dick Tracy :)

    lol@Slides predictable response.

  16. Oh, was Slides comment meant to be a criticism? Desperte, vulnerable and broken are compliments, thats what she was playing.

  17. i think youre right, top secret. if you ever run across a copy of that send it over and ill post it for us. would love to read it! xo

  18. This is a great film.
It's very heavy and dark - you've got to be in that mood to watch it.
    Madonna is brilliant here.
I guess people mistake a commercial flop with critical flop. Even in the 90s, when this movie was out, Madonna was praised for her performance here, no?
The movie didn't go anywhere, but it is definitely one of Madonna's best roles. I love the movie, btw.

  19. @Ivor - I was speaking literally of her acting choices. I thought she delivered a remarkable performance. Swept Away, however...

  20. I love Swept Away! If only for the beautiful scenery! I always start it when Madonna gets on the little boat, about to get stranded lol. Madonna is not a great actress, no, but she has ALWAYS been enjoyable to watch on the big screen.

    Fact.

  21. Madonna's best performance as an actress hand's down. I actually like this film. It's dark and unapologetic. Madonna looked and acted beautifully. One of the very few times I disagreed with what M thought of a project.

  22. @Slide, I think her choice in deciding to do the movie was an opportunity to prove herself as a serious actress, stretch her acting muscles, a great director and apparently a great script to begin, with a feminist message. This, @Trey, was why M was disappointed in the final result - in the original script, her character overcomes adversity and triumphs in the end.
And @Slide again, I love Swept Away so much, I've watched it dozens of times. I laugh, I cry, I'm moved by it. I really think it's a beautiful movie and though her "bitch" is perhaps over the top, her vulnerability feels heartfelt to me. x

  23. This is the only movie where Madonna truly stretched herself acting-wise and pulled it off absolutely brilliantly. She's incredible in this film. You totally forget it's Madonna, and instead, she becomes Sara.

Shit film in the end (though it had potential to be rather genius), but you can't take away Madonna's solid performance in this film.

There's a great piece out there that talks about how Madonna was purposely made to shoot scene after scene over and over and over again...all on purpose...to break her down, in a sense, and it ended up paying off. Her "control" was let go and she became someone else...someone who was supposed to feel beaten up and exhausted.

  24. @Ivor and Christian. The fact that her character did not overcome adversity was the brilliant fact that made her performance great. I think M needed the breakdown to not be MADONNA. M needed to be broken down by the director to give a plausible performance. And it worked. M was pissed because she wasn't highlighted as the hero. And she shouldn't have been for this film.
