Madonna on Whitney Houston's Death

I, probably like everybody else, was hit by this shocking sense of disbelief – especially with Whitney Houston. It had not been a secret, the struggles Amy had been through — both brilliant, brilliant artists and obviously both huge losses. But when these things happen, I’m always shocked by the first thing you say — ‘It’s such a loss’ — which doesn’t quite cover it. Then you reflect and you think, ‘How did it happen? How did the people around them allow it to happen?’ We’ve lost so many great artists that way when you think about it. So history just kind of repeats itself over and over.

One thing I was struck by with Whitney Houston is I remember she sort of came out as a singer around the same time I did. I remember looking at her singing and hearing people talk about her, and just thinking, ‘Oh my God. She’s such a beautiful woman and my God, what an incredible voice. I wish I could sing like that.’ I just remember being extremely envious of her and also touched by her innocence.

  1. Nicely put. That's Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston both dead. Hard to believe in some ways.

We need Madonna because she is the ultimate survivor. Long may she reign.

    1. Amen.

Hopefully in this regard, too, she'll be unique.

  2. I can imagine both deaths effected her very deeply, because it might have been her instead. She might have had moments of her almost breaking down from the pressure, but she was strong enough not to take drugs. She might have even encouraged greedy doctors willing to give her any pain meds.

  4. Nice comments. I liked Whitney when I was a kid and was very sad to here of her death, but I was not shocked. She had a great voice. And I respect her for that, but it's the same old shit. Madonna and Prince seem to be the only Icons from that period still alive and not fucking up because of drugs. M is in it for the long run and I am very happy for that!

    1. It affects me as a fan of music, and it affects me as a grown man who just lost his mother not too long ago. If you lost your mother, you wouild understand. For years, I never understood Madonna's point of view when she talked about losing her mother at a young age. I finally know now, and it's devastating for me as an adult.

    3. Whenever anyone dies, it indeed affects us, spiritually and metaphysically. It's a kabbalistic thought.

  6. Rock on Madonna! She totally is the Queen of Life as Pud anointed her :) She knew the difference between image and life a long time ago. People thought she was just outrageous in real life as her image. But in truth, she is a hard worker and knows what it takes to stay current. She views being an artist as a job that she takes seriously and cultivates her creativity versus destroying it.

  7. Again, I would say and I will say that Madonna is not doing anything for attention, controversy or outrage! They mean nothing to her now! Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston are both dead because both of them totally self-destructed! Madonna, on the other hand-is a hard worker and a studious artist who takes her art extremely seriously. When she grabs her suitcase, steps into a vocal booth, picks up a guitar and starts to cry out her life in song, she is focused on music and nothing else! Michael and Whitney, never even bother to get past their entertainer image. Madonna, by contrast loves her life because even through her sadness, there is joy in her life-Madonna is Love, Art and Music!-she will Never be Forgotten!
