#MDNA 2nd Week Sales Drop. Guess What? I Don't Give A...

#MDNA is Everything & More.

Yeah, I've heard and seen all restless natives. Yeah, Roger Friedman's trying to let the wind out of the sails again. Yeah, I've read about the lack of promotion. Yeah, 2% more than unfortunately Born That Way. :eyeroll:

Here's what I've got to say about it.

It's been like this since the beginning.

    1. Can you stop it with ending sentences with ....

Very annoying and all you do is bitch and complain. Stop being such a Negative Nancy. It's her perfume, her clothing line and her movie. If she wants to prmote those over her album, which is great enough to speak for itself and stand on it;s own legs, then she has every right to.

Leave this fucking blog if all you are going to do is ... after a negative comment.

      Very annoying...

  5. Everybody knows album sales are flat and have been for years now and besides, how does #1 the first week and #8 the second week equal a FAIL??

The real numbers are reflected in the WORLD Chart and MDNA remains in the top 5 all over the globe. MDNA is selling at a about the same rate as "Hard Candy" did and it was the 11th biggest selling album GLOBALLY of 2008.

And all that bullshit aside, since when do sales have anything whatsoever to do with the artistic merit of an album?

What a double standard. If it was anybody else besides Madonna, the press would deem MDNA a HUGE success by any measure. She just beat her own record with her 42nd #1 dance hit, she's sold out stadiums everywhere for her tour and is ADDING dates to meet demand and MDNA is in the Top 10 here and Top 5 all over the globe, but all we hear today is about what a failure Madonna is. Really? If that's failure, I'd like some of that!

  6. Madonna is promoting her CD. It's called a World Tour. Starts next month. Recognize.

    1. or some might argue the CD is justifying her tour. that's where the money is made these days, and Live Nation is first and foremost a tour promoter.

this coming from someone who thinks it's kinda cool the format her promotion has taken for this project (not including the singles choices) - that is, perform at the biggest american show then follow it with small, smart, targeted interviews and social media engagements, rather than the tv thing she's done a million times over.

  7. How much does Paul McCartney sell? Bruce Springsteen? All those other revered artists? Where are they in the charts? What are their first week, 2nd week... sales? I really couldn't give a toss about how many albums she sells. If she sells 10,000,000 I'd be happy. If she sold 10 I'd be happy. It's new music. It's fun new music. It's Madonna.

Saying that I know it's old fashioned but I want old fashioned promo. I want to see her perform one or two songs on a TV show and talking about her album.

    1. Totally agree. I wish she would go on Ellen or The View or David Letterman or even on Howard Stern. I guess she is too much of a QUEEN now.

Im sure if she were to promote her album as much as she did her film, MDNA would have top and broke records.

      Delete
    2. Ok, I see your point. It would be fun to see the one off TV show performance :)

      Delete
    3. Screw all those lame talk shows. They just ask the same questions, over & over. And she'll NEVER go on Stern. Forget that.

      Delete
    4. Nobody wants to see her on Ellen. Ellen is boring. Rosie did it first.

I'd love Letterman or something else, though.

      Delete
    5. letterman would be fab. dont get me wrong anything would be fab! i would love madonna on tv every night of the week!

as someone said in here - madonna is 30 years into a career. had the number one album and still in top 10.

  8. as a super fan who has stood by M through thick and thin, who has constantly defended her......well iam tired of it..specially when i see that M herself and her management dont give a fuck, about her music. so why should i...i will always be a fan , but my days of going the extra mile for her are over

    ReplyDelete

    1. srejvani: I don't mean to be a jerk, but who on earth did you *ever* "go the extra mile for her," whatever that means? Did you buy multiple copies of her singles or albums? Try to promote her releases by mentioning them anywhere and everywhere on line? If so, why did you do those things? I'm honestly curious, because I don't quite understand that kind of thing. Personally, I've always just liked Madonna's personality and music and that was enough for me (as opposed to trying to help her top the charts, which quite honestly does nothing for me, my standing in life, my bank account, etc.). Maybe you should start to look at her and her music in a different way from now on, rather than focus on feeling disappointed, dejected, upset, etc.

      Delete
    2. Bryan Ochalla. I agree. Never understood why ppl care so much about her chart position. M puts a record out, remix Maxi-singles,etc. I buy a copy. End of transaction. I'm not getting a cut of her sales lol. The only time I've gone the "extra mile" for M in the last 30 years has been this year finally. When Little Muffins are around, she can do no wrong and I defend her. But that's more from my personal disgust of Lady FAKE, than love for M.

      Delete
    3. And why are you making excuses for her? She doesn't care what people say so why should you? It's none of your business.

"I never wanna be like some girls..."

  9. All of this becomes easier to take (or ignore) once you start liking an artist for their music, their talent, etc., rather than their album and single sales.

It also helps to realize and understand that, at this point, the public at large and the media in general hate Madonna and wish she would go away. Or, better yet, they wish she would continue existing as she is so they can continue to turn their displeasure about themselves and about the greater world onto someone else (Madonna).

Another thing to ponder/consider: Do you really think Madonna cares about all of this? I don't. If she did, she'd be out there whoring herself out to every radio and TV station that exists, just like every other pop star does these days. Instead, she's working on other things, namely her tour.

So, if Madonna seemingly doesn't care about the dramatic drop in sales MDNA experienced from its first week to its second, why in the hell should I?

    1. bryan, i'm of the same mind and don't give it much attention. so with that, it always underwhelms me when bloggers boast about m being number one in 40-something countries. whilst this is nothing to sneeze at, as the years roll by this i feel this has less and less to do with the quality of her music - afterall, all these people are buying her CD (or having it given away to them after buying a concert ticket) before even being able to sample it (streaming or otherwise) aside from a single - but more to do with her sustained legend. so if you've achieved as much as madonna and being around this long, you are bound to have a captive audience who is at least interested in what you have to say. the drop is simply that group of people being taken care of with nothing left - that is, little remaining interest by the rest of the music-buying community.

aside from that, and to answer your final question -

i think some fans are, instead, defending - heck, justifying - their love for m and the value and energy they have placed on/towards her over so many years. in short, they are defending THEMSELVES. if madonna fails at something, this reflects poorly on them. these kinds of fans have a vested interested that tends to be based as much on their reflection as it does madonna's. like a second-hand pride.

  10. Now let's give the naysayers some benefit of the doubt. Maybe they don't know 8 is less than 10 so it hasn't occurred to them that M has a "Top 10 Record." LOL and never in the history of the music biz has a Top Ten Record been considered a flop..

Anywayzz, Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest = LOVE IT

  11. 30yrs at the *TOP*, DECADE after god damn DECADE. NO BREAKS...ALbums EVERY DECADE. She's a fuckin GENIUS!! All i read lately from new female singers is how MADONNA has inspired them/opened doors. She gets *shit* from press because she's the *best* and deep down..they know it too. Hey *MADONNA FAMILY*, you want my advice...LET ALL THIS SHITE GO OVER YOUR HEAD AND JUST ENJOY!!

  12. Who gives a fuck how well the album is doing? It already debuted at #1 with massive sales (for a Madonna record), provided a top 10 on the Hot 100 singles chart and is about to give her another record breaking world tour.

Sit back, shut up, turn MDNA on, which is fantastic and just be grateful Madonna still does anything at all.

    The End.

    1. tony, i think we all know you would be the first the boast her amazing, sustained sales and chart topping if that was still the case - "she's still on top after X amount of weeks, bitches!", you would say. but alas this isn't the case, and suddenly charts don't mean that much to you afterall.

you are so self unaware it's almost dangerous.

      Delete
    2. and @evrybdy, you still believe that you are a madonna fan. talk about self unaware?

She hit #1. That was all I cared about along with making a good album. She did both and had a top 10 single on the Hot 100 Billboard chart.

      I don't give a fuck if she was #1 or #234 the 2nd week.

Get the fuck over yourself and find a Little Dumpster forum, already. Sheesh!

      Delete
  13. I agree with Tony and Side! Record sales HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with artistry-Madonna is a genius, artist and all-out rocker! If nothing else, MDNA may not be her best record-that honor goes to the four-way tie of True Blue, Like a Prayer, Ray of Light and Music-it's a miracle those four records came on the heels of two violent and explosive firebrands-Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie-your time is up!-You both are not allowed to screw Madonna anymore!-but the first Universal chapter could be her most honest one! It's no surprise that Madonna gave Divorce Rock a good name. It's the romantic obsessiveness of her songs that ultimately matter, not her chart performance! That's why her music connects with people!

The End! I Rest My Case! Case is closed!

  14. I don't think the press so much ditches her personally. They are ditching the Madonna machine and comparing it to all the other current artists. But until it's all said and done they don't ever see the level at which she plays the game. The tour will most likely be the highest grossing ever by any artist or band and the album will be THE album of 2012. Madonna always throws a curve ball into the equation. She always has the best of the best working with her on any current project. It's not just about Madonna maintaining popularity you see. It's not just about Madonna making money either. It's the larger picture. She employees hundreds of people and hundreds of companies profit heavily off of any of her ventures. It goes far beyond simple album sales. And her shows are the best the world has ever seen. Not too shabby if you ask me. There isn't anyone else out there, and I mean there literally isn't anyone else out there that can generate the numbers that she does. Not sure MJ still could if he was still around either. The business savvy of her and those she keeps close always knock it out of the ball park but they always deliver on the same level.

    2. lager, you raise an interesting point. a friend asked me the other day if i could be a fly on the wall during the day of any artist who would it be, and i said m. i chose her cos i would like to know when and why she makes a commercial decision over an artistic one. with all those 'hundreds' of people depending on her, i wonder how much this affects her and how she plays 'the game'. she calls herself an artist, and in so many respects she is. no shade there, just very intrigued how art and commerce collide for her.

      Delete
    3. Madonna is a pop star. Pop isn't about art. It's all commercial.

      Delete
    4. ok I get it... pop = popular and commercial means $$$ but fuck, tony... has Madonna taught you nothing over the years? pop is absolutely about art. at least the kind with integrity and soul. go tell prince that pop is not art. go tell George Michael during his 'faith' days that it's only about the money, or that m shouldn't have taken a commercial chance thematically with 'erotica'... the list goes on. what have you been listening to and being moved by all these years then?

      Delete
    5. Prince? LOL he has like 3 songs. All of his songs sound the same and he hasn't put out a decent song since 1994.

      Delete
    6. 3 songs? Girl what? I was barely alive in the 80's and I know better than that! Little Red Corvette, I Would Die For You, 1999, Let's Go Crazy, Raspberry Beret, Kiss, Diamonds and Pearls, U Got The Look, When Doves Cry, When You Call My Name, Black Sweat (both post-1994 jams)...need I go on?

    1. as a gaga fan madonnas success doesn't affect me. m is in another universe. gaga is still starting out. there is no comparison, yet you always go back to this example for some reason. it's like, pick on someone her own size. but then gaga does have a pretty good one-two punch.

      Delete
    2. Lady Goober is not starting out. She has ended. And she knows it. Watch her unravel!

      Delete
    3. Lady Reductive has a one-two punch? Really?? Of what? She can't dance, she isn't pretty, shae can barely play the piano. She has a good voice for all of the two octaves she has but that is about it. Zero stage presence, zero 'it' factor and a look pulled straight out of 1990's Madonna. There is nothing new, original or entertaining about her. She is always brought up with Madonna because of phags like you who claim she is better, hotter or more commercial. How many #1's does she have? That's right. She is a female drag queen. The Marilyn Manson of the 2010's. Torn Anus meets Manson. If that's your cup of tea (pun intended) then thats fine, but she is no pop star.

She is a hugely popular and famous Torn Anus (Tori Amos). Her shtick is getting tired. Bad romance was great as was most of the Fame Monster EP. the rest since then? Abysmal.

  17. If we are talking about the one-two punch in relation to sales... Gaga has had a second album, that despite selling well... took quite a lashing as far as back lashes go. Part of that was due to her and her label's fault with the mess that were the singe choices and videos from the BTW album. I was not shocked. I was hardly kept interested. Artistically, visually, I felt spent and tired. What would normally have spiked my interest... often fell short. There were moments but... it felt like The Fame was one big moment. It was fresh and new. Gaga is a tallented girl, I think she needs to take a back seat, settle down and really take her time with the new record. Take the time out to wow us again. IF she can do that, then I believe she deserves quite a bit of respect... but now I have diverged from sales talk and now I am talking more music, video and art. I just felt the public knew what was coming this time around... hence the slight backlash.

Gaga is tallent, but people are getting stale on her. One wonders how she can re-invent herself now that she has given us so fucking much, visually. Has she played all of her cards? Musicaly tallented, yes I believe so. But will she ever reach the level of fame she had with The Fame? She would need to wow us again. BTW lacked that. People know what to expect from her now.

And she can't really pull of scandalous, sexy and dangerous like Madonna can. She is quirky. She needs to keep it quirky with elements of sex and darkness playing with her art. BTW was very dark (I personally enjoyed that) but it had no real quirk. Gaga use to make me smile. Now not so much. Have you noticed how dark her videos have become since Alejandro? Much of the original members from the Haus Of Gaga are no longer by her side...

M has been wowing us, shocking us and proving us wrong in every way for nearly 30 yrs.

I hope Gaga hasn't run out of steam... but then again this isn't a Gaga forum and I should take this discussion elsewhere.

I guess I'm saying, in relation to success and sales, Gaga really hasn't showed much of a one-two punch at this point. Successful YES. Very. But the second punch packed a lot less of an impact than the first... just saying.

    1. I agree. They booked a few stadiums for her next tour. Let's see if she can fill them up thru out her career.

    2. I'm all for trashing Gaga as she is just awful, but we as Madonna fans should be cautious about questioning her career with the same limitations the critics have always aimed at Madonna...Questioning whether or not she has it in her to reinvent herself again after exposing so much is a little ripe coming from anyone following Madonna's career, although I do have to state that with the Goober snout, her visual options are limited.

      Delete
    3. I don't like trashing Lady Gaga as I do think she is talented, but unfortunately, she copies most of her looks from Madonna as well as a million other artists. There is nothing new or original about her and she is just not a pop star. She can't dance and she isn't pretty. That equates not a pop star.

She needs to embrace her Tori Amos/Marilyn Manson like performance/look style and just sit behind a piano and play lounges. That would be fantastic! But please, stay out of the pop world. You aren't pop and you certainly aren't art.

      Delete
    4. ...did you hear that, ladies and gentlemen? according to tony, lady gaga is not a popstar. I repeat, lady gaga is not a popstar. if you've enjoyed her videos and her songs on pop station then you are sorely mistaken. its all an illusion! theres too much confusion! the authority has spoken and your ideas have been redefined. this is fact. hang up your fiction. jack ass.

  19. Interscope is doing a terrible job. Where are the remix ep for both singles. This how songs stay on the charts. There are 10 official remix for a singles today. . As for the sales drop, this is normal today, because of pre sales on iTunes. I rather pay 9.99 than 15.99. These sale drop record is broken every year.
