Terry Wogan Interviews Madonna

Listen, it doesn't get anymore gorgeous than this. Here in America we got little snippets (snippets!!!!) of this interview on MTV that my friends and I referred to "the green dress day", because we knew no better. It was our quest to get the entire interview. Well, of course, it didn't happen until the internet era - 5,000 years after the fact. But, it was well worth the wait.

Promoting Truth or Dare (In Bed with Madonna), Madonna sits down with Terry Wogan looking fabulous with a radiance that just won't quit. This is 1991 and take notice that her beauty mark above her lip is not present and it has gravitated underneath her left eye.

Madonna on the loss of her mother, homophobia, Catholicism, the Vatican, Evita, self love, dreams, sexism, honesty, her dad, Michael Jackson, Sean Penn, her friends, being a 'role model', her early years pre-fame, acting, producing, directing, even Easter and a plethora more. It's a long interview but she covers a hell of a lot. Also, I've always loved how she is absolutely perched in position for the camera and when they do the long shot, her legs are all over the place but she makes sure for that camera she is flawless. One of my all-time favorite interviews.

Wogan: You're a heroine, of course, to many billions of young people - young girls and even boys.

Madonna: Mmmhmm.

Madonna gave one of the greatest live televised performances of all time on March 29, 1991 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in front of Hollywood's elite and over 50 million viewers around the world at the 63rd annual Academy Awards. Her, the spotlight, an audience and the camera.

Fabulous. She's Old Hollywood personified at a time when high potent glamour was to take the back seat to serious bullshyt. Just one of her many Fuck You's.

Drenched in 20 million dollars worth of Harry Winston diamonds, a mink stole and a diamond and pearl encrusted Bob Mackie gown, Madonna stole the show singing Stephen Sondheim's Sooner or Later from Dick Tracy.

Emerging from beneath the stage, she gave a live performance that all the great movie queens - combined - could only dream of. With great voice, flawless choreography and a full orchestra, she strips off a glove, beats that stage with her fur and throws one of her diamond earrings into the orchestra pit. The Jackpot of Star. A fantastically bombastic performance with the greatest exit scene that the Academy Awards has ever seen before or till date.

Sooner or Later won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

On May 1st, 1990, Madonna's second talk show appearance, after Johnny Carson in '87, was once again a television event (not counting '88 Letterman with Sandra). Promoting Dick Tracy and her Blond Ambition Tour, Madonna came out swinging and looked like a silent film star in color. Her delicate features were painted like a china doll.

Everyone waited in line at the Paramount Studios - on the Gower side - since 4 am that morning. Getting there early was of the utmost importance to insure being in front. As the line grew and grew - hundreds were turned away. These were pre-internet days and you would be with your friends and make new ones in line and there was none of that nastiness you see now. It was all about love. Still is, in my group. About 3 pm, they let everyone in and the energy was amazing. Madonna always ignites enormous excitement.

As I said, all had been there since the wee hours of the morning, so after staff members on show did their version of Vogue, Arsenio cut his monologue short and brought Madonna on early. Hanging on every word she said, she was everything we wanted. A real star.
