On May 1st, 1990, Madonna's second talk show appearance, after Johnny Carson in '87, was once again a television event (not counting '88 Letterman with Sandra). Promoting Dick Tracy and her Blond Ambition Tour, Madonna came out swinging and looked like a silent film star in color. Her delicate features were painted like a china doll.
Everyone waited in line at the Paramount Studios - on the Gower side - since 4 am that morning. Getting there early was of the utmost importance to insure being in front. As the line grew and grew - hundreds were turned away. These were pre-internet days and you would be with your friends and make new ones in line and there was none of that nastiness you see now. It was all about love. Still is, in my group. About 3 pm, they let everyone in and the energy was amazing. Madonna always ignites enormous excitement.
As I said, all had been there since the wee hours of the morning, so after staff members on show did their version of Vogue, Arsenio cut his monologue short and brought Madonna on early. Hanging on every word she said, she was everything we wanted. A real star.
I've put in 3 parts. Enjoy.
she was on top of the world here. great time period for her (and us).
ReplyDeleteHer "wild imagination". I think she's brilliant. No matter what.
ReplyDeleteI die for those eyebrows!
Yes, Pud, "she was everything we wanted". Thank you fo sharing. My favorite M's era (like most of us here) is 1980th. During the pre-internet era and living in Russia, I saw Like a Virgin video for the first time in the early 1990th! It was extremely difficult to find any info about M back that day in my city. No video, no cassettes, no CDs, no magazines. And I was a hunter for any info about M. So, Pud, your blog is invaluable for me and I really enjoy it. The last decade is not very interested because we can see every M's step in the internet. But pre-internet era is the most interested. I think if Madonna would visit your blog one day she would be surprised with the complete press- and video-report about herself:)
ReplyDeleteThis blog is the BEST MADONNA PLACE ON THE INTERNET. No question.
ReplyDeleteI love that you were at this Arsenio Hall show Pud - I never knew that. You being at Johnny Carson still blows me away and now this.
I never saw her until 1993 - and never saw her at a TV show until 2003. I just cannot imagine what it would have been like to have seen Madonna at one of these legendary TV appearances. I'm in awe man!
After this performance, the nigger dissapeared. Maddie curses everything and everyone who crosses her way.
ReplyDeleteWoow! Great interview :) Thank you so much. I always look forward to coming home and checking your blog :)
ReplyDeleteOMG thank you. I saw this originally on TV in the 5th grade. I was absolutely mesmerized by her. 1990 she was so on fire massive zeitgeist non-stop that whole year. I rediscovered this interview again after many years a couple years ago but the rip didn't have the opening when she came out mimicking Arsenio's signature entrance on the show. It's so funny and I'm thrilled to see it again!
