The hair, the face, the flats, the jacket. All wonderful.
Sean Penn and Madonna at Manhattan’s Columbus Cafe, 1986
Ron Galella: ”Madonna and Sean Penn walked all the way from the grocery store after a performance. That’s a long walk from 65th to 75th, ten blocks up Columbus Avenue. They went to have dinner at Columbus Café and the proprietor was very anti-paparazzi. He would always chase us away. Fortunately they took a table right near the window on 75th street. So I shot through the window, then I ran because I knew that guy was going to come running after us. That’s how I got that picture, and it’s one of my favorites.”
She looks like she just stepped off the Vanity Fair/True Blue cover shoot. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI heard about Goose and Tom Tom in 1986, but never had a clue as to what the story was. Was it a one night thing? Any video of it? ANYTHING? Pudd, please enlighten us (or at least me!)
ReplyDeleteAnd I think the photo referred to was a pinup in BOP magazine.
Trey, Madonna and Sean did a theater workshop production of David Rabe's Goose and TomTom performed for selected invitees only. It played for 4 nights at the end of August in 86. No video. Nothing. They didn't want any press and when Martin Burgoyne gave his ticket to Andy Warhol a fuss was made because they considered him "press" - according to his diaries. I think youre right about it being a pin up in Bop. x
ReplyDeleteThanks for clearing it up Pudd! God I wish there were video of this.
Deletei luved them 2gether!
ReplyDeleteThese photos scream SUPERSTAR! She looks fabulous.
ReplyDelete100%
DeleteAgreed. You have to just love the Pappa Don't Preach leather jacket. I always *loved* the way she wore clothing from video's in her real everyday life. I wonder if she still has that great jacket. SHE HAS TO!
DeleteTotally. Love these shots. She is glowing.
Delete& u can jst tell...she knew it!
ReplyDeleteOh Look who's back! Pud? what is up with you and the breaks in posts? I look forward to you posting at least twice a day. Everything okay buttercup? Or are you just on Summer Holiday?
ReplyDeleteRegardless ~ this, as well as everything you post continues to bring me back to my teenage years. It's funny, I was walking up town just the other day and thought of that very picture. If I remember tho, in the papers they said these picks were taken at The Russian Tea Room (on 57th) The "Columbus Cafe" menu is clearly visable in this pic now.
..and does anyone else see the Halo glow around her head? Love IT!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a perfect jaw line.
ReplyDeleteYou could definitely tell it after that play with the sadness, the tears and all the anger, that Madonna and Sean really weren't meant for each other! Live to Tell is an extremely angry and sad ballad! In that sad song, you can hear the absolute sadness, rage and horror in her voice-a Pop/Rock version of George Jones' Country Classic He Stopped Loving Her Today. Both Live to Tell and He Stopped Loving Her Today have much in common-both are ballads, they are sad songs and they both hit #1. Most of all, these two American classics will live forever! There will Never be another Possum and another Material Girl/Evita!
ReplyDeleteShe looks terrible. lol
ReplyDeleteThis look is by far my least favorite.
Iconic in the videos from True Blue and the album cover, aside from that, blah.'
Completely unsexy, which is what she obviously was trying to go for.
The 5th Golden Girl :P
Oh do shut up.
Deletetony werent you gearing up to 'Shake Your Love' at this very moment in time? xo
DeleteDebbie Gibson?
Delete@lager - lick it
Delete@pud - yes, I was about to be shaking my love and out of the blue it was only in my dreams! ;)
tony, the hair, the flats..50's glamour. shes lana turner/judy holliday up and through. always look at it through the peripheral. xo
DeleteI know, I know. I just don't like the look on her. It was essential for her to do as it's incredibly iconic now (her look). I do realize that. :)
DeleteI watched that movie "Smash His Camera" on Netflix last night. That guy was a celebrity in his own right.
ReplyDeleteOh do shut the fuck up.
Deletenot my fave look either but it certainly was iconic and i really would love to see an interview where she talks about those days. she's always taking about a new album or tour. i would love a sit down interview talking about what her manager freddie said about her hair being bleaches white and cut after the virgin era. where any pr people angry with her. which stylist gets the credit for doing her hair like that the frist time. it looked great in the papa don't preach video all jelled with the wet look. really cute.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Freddie had learned by 1986 to trust her, since he shortsightedly proclaimed career "was over" after her LAV performance at the '84 VMA's. And although this "Marilyn" transformation was the first of many, it was most pivotal. It was a game changer for her AND pop music.. an industry built on establishing a successful image. She had balls of steel to reinvent her image so early in her career.. who would have guessed this would become her trademark.
Deleteagreed. i think this kind of stuff is what has kept a huge fan base for her still. she has time and time again out out art for the masses and done a ton of interviews but doesn't sit down and reminisce about her past.
DeleteId love for her to talk about the letter she wrote to lewicki the director of that awful movie she did in the 80's
how she again wrote a letter to alan parker to be in evita
what she thought of debbie mazar when she met her
just anything form her past- its all so intersting
I'd like to see her pull off a short hair style again. She's had that strawberry blonde look going for years now. I personally like her with black hair or even the dark brunette she sported in the American Life days. And I always liked the "Rain" and "I'll Remember" pixie hair styles.
ReplyDeletelol nice try. ;)
DeleteAnd she looked horrible in the Rain and I'll Remember videos.
Terrible! Especially in that girlie interview. so harsh. awful.
Eye of the beholder Tony...
DeleteShe looked awesome in Rain and I'll Remember.
