Bedtime Stories

Whaaaaaaaaat?

Madonna's Bedtime Stories is 17 years old today?!!!
Anyway, one of my favorite albums. Lyrically, I think she is her best here. The lush smoothness of her vocals with those beats are fab. It's either hit or miss with her fans, definitely a hit for me from beginning to end.

Fav songs are Secret, Don't Stop, Inside of Me, Forbidden Love, Love Tried to Welcome Me, Sanctuary, Bedtime Story, Take a Bow.

  1. Good album. I liked how she sampled from the poem "Love" in "Love Tried to Welcome Me". She made a beautiful song out of it.

  2. 17 bloody years! I feel old. Junior V was still doing the mixes, and the club scene in NY was still existing.
I felt this was a good balance of R&B pop meets UK sound.
I love the start of Survival, very fun pop, and i love how sanctuary blends into bedtime story.

  3. This one was a lull for me. I loved Secret and Forbidden Love. I knew the second I heard Take A bow that it would be a hit, but sooooo overplayed. Wish we could say that about an M song these days. And I liked Human Nature for the lyrics and video. Actually it is one of my fave M tracks ever now.

  4. A very underrated album by her. It had the unfortunate timing of being sandwiched between two of her masterworks ('Erotica' and 'Ray of Light'). It's a slow burn of an album, but never becomes tiresome or repetitive. 'Sanctuary' is a hidden gem of a song that pairs up wonderfully with 'Bedtime Story'

  5. And I see some of my points were already made above. Whoops. They bear repeating though. :)

  6. That long ago, huh.
I did like it,especially since Me'shell Ndégéocello was on it whom I was a big fan of (not so much since I saw her live but that's another story).
The only song I didn't really care for was Bedtime Stories, but I played Human Nature over and over. I loved how that was her answer to the harshness towards her at the time.

  8. its a very non-descrpt madonna album. one that can be played in the room where everyone is not commenting on her personal life and shyt. just a great album. its smooth, its groovy. for the nay-sayers that are going off memory, try playing it again and see how you feel. xo

  9. Sorry, but songs like, 'I'd Rather Be Your Lover' and, 'Survival' are among her worst recorded songs.

There are a few gems, but again, those gems are mixed in with some of her worst (IMO) recordings ever.

  12. I have that vinyl special pink edition, is that valuable?

  13. Love the pink vinyl. Hated the European upside down cover photo (how did they get away with that?!)

Loved half the album, including I'd Rather Be Your Lover and Love Tried to Welcome Me. Didn't care for Bedtime Story the song, at all, but loved Sanctuary.

There was a BRILLIANT review of the album in the UK's NME which gave it 9/10 and came with the headline "My, what big hits you have". Anybody have it? Would be great to see it again.

  14. PS the cover of Human Nature has to be one of her best single covers ever.

  15. I LOVE this album. When it first came out, I ran my first (and last) marathon and in those days, I had a Sony Walkman with this cassette in it the whole time I ran. I actually almost tripped a couple of times when I ejected the cassette to turn it to the other side. Every syllable of that album is ingrained into my brain and to this day, it fits like a glove. "Secret" and it's remixes is my personal favorite song from the album, followed by "Human Nature". Every song, though, stands on it's own. It's some of her best work!

  16. wow shle896 that is such a great story! i know hard it is to run a marathan let a lone with walkman.
To all the bedtime story haters. I think it was a great balance of r&b and new sound to take her away from all the sex/erotica backlash. I love bedtime stories! It was a good time to be in yr 20s. FUN!

  17. Yikes! I was only 16. Maybe that's why I think 'Survival' is shit?

  18. @Tony: I was only 8 and I loved it. Maybe because it reminds of me of that whole 90's R&B sound (i.e. Mary J Blige, TLC, etc.) I don't why people treat Bedtime Stories like a redheaded stepchild.
