The Truth is I Never Left You

Madonna in @TheAdvocateMag: Out Now

Oh, fags. I'm so glad she finally said it - for she is LIKE EVERY OTHER FAG who when they get their piece, they disappear. CATCH IT!!! God, oh God. Really not at the forefront anymore, are we? Replicating those heterosexuals.

Perhaps Madonna wasn’t the only one to “confuse” her personal treatment with that of gay men. The feeling was mutual. As she exploded in popularity Madonna became identified with the collective gay male sense of self. So when she moved on, devoting less and less time to her gay compatriots, many felt a twinge of abandonment. That’s when bitching about Madonna became the great gay pastime.

“I never left them,” insists Madonna, echoing a lyric from Evita. “When you’re single, you certainly have more time to socialize and hang out with your gay friends, but then you get married and you have a husband and you have children, and your husband wants you to spend time with him. I’m not married anymore, but I have four kids, and I don’t have a lot of time for socializing.” She’s been back in New York for two years, after splitting with Ritchie.“I hope nobody’s taking that personally. It certainly was not a conscious decision. As it stands, most of my friends in England are gay. But I’m back,” she says, adding reassuringly, “Never fear.”

To many fans, that symbiosis has the outward appearance of the relationship Madonna had with her gay fans earlier in her career. Gaga has an intertwined dependence in which her fans’ pain and alienation are bound up with her own. Perhaps every generation gets the gay icon it needs. For today’s wave of queer youth, it’s Gaga, who is spreading the antibullying gospel. But she has undoubtedly taken cues from the Madonna playbook. Whether she’s singing the “Express Yourself” — reminiscent “Born This Way” or producing her Truth or Dare-like HBO concert film, Gaga is following a trail that Madonna blazed.

  3. madonna is/was/has always been about personal empowerment. unlike judy, miss ross the boss or barbra, madonna really fought against homophobia and crusaded for gays PUBLICLY at a time where it could have destroyed her career. she busted those doors down and made it possible. i dont understand why gays always want to be coddled. its embarassing. SIT UP, STAND UP AND MOVE ALONG WEAKLINGS. be yourself.

    1. Amen. Madonna never had to proclaim herself the gay savior like that other person has. Gay men and women were drawn to her for her inhibition, strength and "fuck off" attitude. She has always loved "us", but didn't have to use it as a promotional demographic tool to sell records and become adored.

  4. It's DISGRACEFUL how the media is treating Madonna, utterly disgraceful, and the way fags have abandoned her and betrayed her? It's behavior only worthy of SCUM.

We are on the third Madonna is over cycle, it's a ciclycal(sp?) thing, it happens every 10 years. It happened in 1992, it happened in 2002 and it's happening now in 2012.

Of course she'll endure and keep on being the Queen Bee of pop but goddamn it, it's annoying as hell, I feel so much impotence.

    2. I see what you are saying, but there are always going to be people who absolutely HATE Madonna. It's been that way since 1983. When I read hateful comments about Madonna( and there are tons right now) it pisses me off too, but it doesn't mean ANYTHING. As for "fags" yeah I can see your point to a degree, but there are many "fags" that don't follow the gay "rules". Don't feel ashamed of being gay. Just don't follow.

  6. ramon, you have issues. internal homophobia?

anyway, i can't identify with the 'she left us' thing. i think it's just some over-dramatised thing that never really was felt that strongle in the gay community. i've never had a discussion about it with people. if you have half a brain you'd know that half the men she works with are gay. i think that speaks volumes.
