30th Anniversary for #Madonna Everybody

April 24, or October 6th, 1982?

There's some discrepancy about Everybody. Some say it was today when it all began, others say it was October 6, 1982?  What Have You Got for Me?

*UPDATE
Nina got it straight:

'Everybody' was released in October 1982. The confusion with April is because Madonna was actually signed to Sire Records, for a singles-deal, in April 1982. Then after the success of 'Everybody' and 'Burning Up' on the Billboard dance/club and Bubbling Under Hot 100 singles charts, Warner Bros. (Sire's parent company) jumped in and signed her to a full-on record deal in 1983, through Sire. So basically she signed a singles-deal with Sire in April 1982, got 'Everybody' released in October 1982, then signed the record deal with Sire/Warner Bros. in 1983, with the debut album following that summer. The rest is history... THE MOST SPECTACULAR CAREER IN POP MUSIC.

Madonna signed to Sire Records.  Everybody was released.  I can go on and on about Everybody but I think it would be cool if we all shared what our favorite thing about it is.  I always loved the dub on the B side of the 12".  It was and always has been about that dirty bass line and that voice from the heavens.  Forever and ever.  Amen.

love the inhaling at the end.

  1. For me it was her voice "Come on, I know you wanna get up" Who did that then? Still love it!

  2. A) The Virgin Tour '85!!! black light, funky hat, ghetto blaster... ""Every girl has a box, but my box is special. Because mine makes music. But of course it has to be turned on"

    B) Coachella Festival 2006 - whipping the crowd into a frenzy with this timeless classic!!

  3. I wouldn't be born for another two years, but my life had already changed.

It's one of my top 5 or top 10 Madge's songs from the 80s, but I didn't discover it until 2004...

My mom's a big Madonna fan, but she didn't own "Madonna." Instead, as I grew up we only listened to True Blue, LAP and the Immaculate Collection. That's when I picked up the Madge habit - bought I'm Breathless and Bedtime Stories (Mom got Erotica and didn't let me go to the Girlie Show with her!).

In 2004, the artist Annie sampled Everybody in her song The Greatest Hit. A Pitchfork review pointed this out, and I instantly went and looked for Everybody and got the whole album. Loved it right away.

Then the Confessions tour happened and I went from big fan to absolute devotee. And here we are.

  4. Great, classic Madonna song. Where it all began. Summoning people to get up, dance and do their thing. What a fitting first single.

  5. The one that started it all...

    1. I can imagine her promoting this song before its official.

    2. I'm surprised this early phase of Madonna's career is still not well-documented. We still don't know much about what really happened from the day she got signed to Sire in April '82 (if it's really April '82) to the release of the first single in October '82, and even what happened between 'Everybody' and 'Burning Up', then the time between 'Burning Up' and the first album, etc. I hope one day an INTELLIGENT biographer writes a really comprehensive book on Madonna with emphasis on her work, the actual timeline, etc. They did write such a comprehensive book on Elvis http://amzn.to/7mtXpG and The Beatles http://amzn.to/JFpkmR who really are her only equals in terms of chart domination, record sales and cultural impact.

    3. Have you ever read Like An Icon by Lucy O Brien? It's the closest thing to what you described.

    4. Like An Icon is full of false information and anachronisms. There is no truly informative Madonna biography. Nina is right.

    5. yes, i have read every horrible M bio. and even though lucy touted hers as the most informative and 'extensively researched' bio, on page ONE she refers to the virgin tour as The Like a Virgin Tour and on page two says Music was released in 2001 and follows with, "Since the 1988 Who's That Girl Tour..."

      sorry lucy.

i came around in October of 83, so thats where my timeline begins. thats why this year before is a little shady for me.

    6. 'Like An Icon' by Lucy O'Brien is not comprehensive at all, it mostly perpetuates the same ol' myths that countless other biographies already had and doesn't really dig deep in each period. Quite fuzzy. Hopefully one day we'll get a truly comprehensive book about Madonna that focuses on what really happened at each stage of her career, her music, etc., might come in two volumes!! By the way, who remembers one of the very first Madonna book from 1985 by Mark Bego "Madonna!" (before he wrote his second horrible book "Madonna: Blonde Ambition")? You can't find it in the US, I found it in France (in French), this early book is actually the most comprehensive when it comes to the early days, it even has interviews with Madonna, Jellybean, Mark Kamins, etc.

    7. Nina - I have that book - ordered it through Bop Magazine back in 85 - such a great read!!!

    9. Ok everyone calm down lol. I said it was the closest, I didn't say it was perfect. Personally I enjoyed the book, a few incorrect facts notwithstanding. I felt she delved into the creative process behind each album pretty well, and (perhaps because I wasn't around in the beginning to absorb things first hand) found out a few things I didn't know. Although it was clear she was/is a fan, she managed to be critical about some aspects of Madonna's work and offered some new perspective about her (particularly the bit about her rape in New York may have influenced her aggressive image and decision to do the SEX book).

Like I said perhaps it's not perfect, but compared to other Madonna bios I've read it's pretty good IMO. Perhaps we need a superfan like Matt Rettenmund to do Madge justice.

  7. My brother had this record. I was born in 1978. I was too young to understand life in manhattan in the early 80's. If I want get a feel of the lower east side during that time I just listen to Everybody. The song represents that time.

  8. Seeing this album cover (which I have, btw. A promo copy, no less) makes me think of the beginning of the VHS for The Virgin Tour. “I wanted to go to New York, I wanted to be a big star, I worked really hard. And, my dream came true.” I’ve always felt a special bond with this record - it’s Madonna, duh - but because my birthday is Oct 4th, 1982. I always say it was in the stars for me to celebrate Madonna as much as I have. At any rate, this is the OFFICIAL start of it all. I’m glad she’s still kicking and hasn’t gone the way of other 80s acts. Here’s to another 30 years!

  9. Didn't discover Everybody until after Borderline and Lucky Star were on the radio. That's when I got the first album. My favorite is the outro with just her voice accapella. Love this track!

  11. Agree with Richard! Everybody is a beautiful song! When Madonna Happily Cries "Dance and Sing/Get Up and Do Your Thing!," Beatiful Tears Are Running and Streaming Down Her Wet Face! Madonna Is Laughing and Smiling-but Here's the Catch
-She's All Still Wet because Her Mother is not there. Yet it's Her Determination That Takes Lady Madge to the very top of the Rock Tree-Today, Madonna Still Cries Happily and Sadly-"I Have Worked Really Hard, I Still Want to make people Happy and My Dreams Will Forever Come True!" For Madonna, Here Are the Detroit Facts. Unlike other Eighties Recording Acts, Here's Where Madonna Stacks Up and Wins Easily-U2-Madonna's Only True Contemporary still making brilliant Rock but unfortunately at this stage in their career, unsure of which musical direction they'll take next, R.E.M.-another band who had a long career-their early Murmur/Document work was innovative and trailblazing but their Green/Collapse period although acclaimed and successful, their ambition became a curse-they have since disbanded. Prince-for a time Madonna's only true rival in terms of success and artistry-Later became one of rock's recluses, a sharp decline and drop in musical quality and is now semi-retired from msic itself. Finally, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston-two talented singers who lost it all because of fame-both die and take their own lives from drugs. The facts don't lie-Madonna is still on top! Here to another 30 years, Miss Ciccone/Peron/Simpson Madonna Forever In the Evidence of Her Brilliance!

    1. To Filip, the record got released in december in the Uk. The singles and 12" features the exclusive Rusty Egan remixes for the Uk market!! The uk 7" dub is one of the best mixes ever, totally deconstructing the various elements of the song!! Hope this help to piece back together some history in the making :)))))

    2. yes and madonna wasnt happy about that rusty egan mix. she said something along the lines of: "it didnt need anything done to it" ha! rusty dates back to the blitz kids with boy george and marilyn.

  13. Liz Rosemberg wrote in april 2007 on madonna.com:

"It may seem like only yesterday but 25 years ago on , Sire Records honcho Seymour Stein released a single called "Everybody" on Warner Bros. Records by an unknown singer from Rochester, Michigan by the name of Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone.

To say the world would never be the same is an understatement.

The song went on to become a huge dancefloor hit and was heard all over the radio in the Summer of 1982. That little girl from Michigan would go on to become one of the most famous entertainers and cultural icons in history - selling close to 200 million records and remaining a star of enormous magnitude and influence for the next 25 years.

She's just getting started. Long Live the Queen and Happy Anniversary to Madonna.

    Liz Rosenberg"

  15. 1987 ruined a lot of Madonna classics. YCD is just blah. Loved it back in the day, but now it's so cringe-worthy to me.

But we got the fantastic, 'Spotlight' from it, so well worth it.

  16. Tony that's just blah, i have the unmixed versions on my iPod list i call CD single remixes, it has every 12" extended dance mix of all the classics, EXCEPT hanky panky ...... that remix is cringe-worthy,

I love every Madonna 12 from 82 to 2000, Remixes from her now and since then are more awful than good,

  17. I loved the Hanky Panky mixes! Had the cassette maxi single back in the day. 1990 was such a great summer!
