I Made Up My Mind

In the mid 80's, as her contemporaries ballooned and were drowning in their cemented public images, Madonna opted to crop her hair off, strip away the layered look and exhibited a sculpted physique that would later define that decade. Papa Don't Preach was that moment where Madonna showcased not only the strong vocals on the song but also her wonderful classic 50's Americana style in the accompanying video, directed by James Foley. While we got a little prior glimpse of the upcoming change of sound and look with Live to Tell, this was her real first major metamorphosis since her debut album, Madonna, in 1983.

Prior to Madonna, a star would create a public image and stick with it so the public would be able to identify them. Not so from this moment on. A chameleon by nature, it was innate with Madonna to change. For the others, then and now, it seems forced and expected.

Madonna attended the Don't Bungle the Jungle Benefit with Sandra Bernhard, Debi Mazar, Keith Haring, on May 24, 1989. It was here that Madonna and Sandra performed their rendition of Sonny and Cher's, I Got You Babe - wearing the shorts made for them by Keith xo.

"This is the First Talk Show I've Ever Done..."

I was 16, My mom dropped me off at 4 am to Burbank Studios and I waited all day to get in to see Madonna on The Tonight Show. My best buddies were there, too. They interviewed and showed me on the evening news - it was Fritz Coleman, local Los Angeles News Anchor, from NBC.

Anyway, we saw her arrive with Debi Mazar, who had a blond lovelock (that Madonna later sported for the Like a Prayer Pepsi Commercial), and Madonna arrived in the outfit she wore on the show with a leather jacket on. She was, of course, gorgeous and fantastic. 4 years into being the Biggest Star That Has Ever Lived, this was her first talk show.

Like everything dealing with Madonna, it was an Event.
