24 years ago Tonight! Who's That Girl Tour in Miami

Madonna kicked off the North American leg of her Who's That Girl Tour in Miami, Florida in front of 70,000 fans with MTV news and cameras all about. I stayed at home and recorded all the footage from MTV - it was fantastic. The Miami version of Causing a Commotion is still my favorite version of all time. She was all rained on and buff, androgynous and fabulous. The song hadn't been released yet. She kicked ass in that Florida heat even with all them Horrida bugs flying around her and shyt. Fantastique!!!

MTV news report.

The greatest Causing a Commotion of all time. Even if the footage is jack'd up.

Open Your Heart - so clear and wonderful - shot for the MTV broadcast.

Mahalo! Madonna Does Hawaii

Over the last 28 years, she's been so many women that it's difficult to put them all together. But here, Madonna's Hussy Sex Bomb incarnation was superbly photographed by Herb Ritts in Hawaii ~ at the height of Like a Virgin's success.

Living in pop culture's Madonna Aftermath - it's hard to remember the furor she caused just wearing her innate sex. The Gloria Steinem feminists were horrified, saying she was setting women back 25 years. Seems tame now - throes of ecstasy, nipples and all - but you can still feel it.

Two of these shots were featured in Rolling Stone's Summer Style section in May 1985.

"Like a Virgin" Album 'Wedding Gown' at the Hard Rock Cafe - Universal City

Went to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios on Sunday and when we were in Universal City Walk, I knew that the dress was in the Hard Rock Cafe. Before we all went to the amusement park, I said, "we have to make a quick pit-stop". Everyone loved it. It was so little and fabulous. The hearts on the tulle are in shambles but the merry widow and it's 'webbing' are fantastic even down to the little pendant between the breast cups.

25 years ago today - Madonna and Mary Lambert's 'Material Girl' Video

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The perfect marriage of song and video was presented to the world with the premiere of Madonna and Mary Lambert's Material Girl, 25 years ago today. Nothing in the video world has ever come close - although all have tried. It's difficult to imagine one without the other.
This was Madonna's first foray into the back catalog of Hollywood, creating the 'New Movie Star'. A star that came into our living rooms and for four and half minutes, gave us glamour, beauty, attitude, pathos, story, drama, sex, comedy - and myth. All delivered with the perfect soundtrack sung by the actress herself. For Generation X, Madonna is the greatest actress that has ever lived.
She had already given superb performances in two previous Mary Lambert 'films', Borderline and Like a Virgin. Madonna was a silent film star to a new generation that was on par with Theda Bara, Clara Bow, Gloria Swanson and Pola Negri.
It is here with Material Girl, that Madonna truly solidified her status as The New Movie Star. In fact, she is a composite of all the great stars.
Without further ado, Material Girl.
Grace Jones @ the Hollywood Bowl - Fantastique!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I comment that Madonna has copied many of the looks Grace has worked, such as the conical boobs, the dominatrix garb and the boxing one. "Yeah I know", she agrees. "A lot. And the Like A Virgin wedding dress thing I did before her. She's taken stuff, but that's all right, it's flattery I guess." Did she get on with Madonna? "I never spent that much time with her, but there is one thing she did do, that she knows, that I have never spoken about to the press, and I don't I ever will until I write my autobiography. It's one thing did do that angered me."
